Why Is Wood A Popular Gift For A 5th Wedding Anniversary?

The fifth wedding anniversary is an important milestone for couples as their marriage has had time to strengthen and mature, and withstood the challenges that life inevitably brings from time to time. It’s certainly an occasion that deserves to be recognised and celebrated, and the customary gift for a five-year anniversary is an item made from wood.

Here’s a look at why wood is the designated material for this anniversary, and why Welsh lovespoons are an ideal choice of gift for any couple approaching this significant day.

Why are there designated materials for anniversary gifts?

If you are not familiar with the tradition of using assigned materials for anniversary gifts, it’s a practice that dates back to Mediaeval times, although it didn’t really take hold in Europe until the Victorian era when more people married for love rather than for more prosaic reasons.

The gifts range from paper for the first anniversary to crystal for the 15th. After the 15th anniversary, the designated gifts are marked at intervals of every five years rather than annually, and go all the way up to the 60th anniversary (couples making it all the way to this remarkable occasion can expect to receive diamond gifts!).

No one really knows exactly why certain materials have been assigned to each year, but they all offer potential for practical and durable presents that couples starting out in life will need, such as linens, crockery, kitchen utensils, curtains, and so on. Of course, many of these materials are beautiful as well as useful.

Why is wood a special and symbolic gift?

The beauty and durability of wood offers one of the most versatile choices for anniversary gifts. It perfectly encapsulates the qualities of a successful marriage: it is strong and long lasting, and also has the ability to flex and grow with time.

The deep roots of a tree symbolise stability and groundedness, providing a firm foundation for love to grow and prosper. Trees are capable of withstanding gales and deep frosts, and they flourish and continue to branch outwards and upwards with each season.

Welsh love spoons are hand carved from the finest quality walnut, sycamore, or limewood, which provides a beautiful crisp finish. This is ideal for showcasing the unique symbols that are carved into the handle of each spoon.

The symbols carry a special meaning, allowing you to select a design that you feel best reflects the recipients of your gift.

For example, for an anniversary you may like to choose an anchor to represent attachment and stability; a heart-shaped bowl to represent a full and happy life together; Celtic knotwork to represent togetherness and eternity; or a diamond to represent wealth and prosperity.

Whichever design you choose, a love spoon is a thoughtful gift that is not only an item of outstanding craftsmanship, but one that is imbued with a personal and cultural significance.
