Welsh love spoons are decorative hand carved wooden spoons, which have been traditionally given as a romantic gift to a prospective love match. The symbols carved into the handle carry various meanings, which represent among other things love, loyalty, and God’s favour.
As well as being a beautiful piece of handmade artwork to hang in your home, they have a high sentimental value for many people. The spoons are now given as a gift to commemorate a variety of milestone occasions, such as weddings, anniversaries, births, birthdays, christenings, or simply to celebrate a special person in your life.
To make the love spoon even more unique and personal, you can also request that a message is inscribed on the spoon. This is usually on the back, but you can have it inscribed on the front if you prefer. The message could be positioned on the bowl of the spoon, or on a suitable place on the handle, such as a heart.
For weddings, anniversaries, and engagements, it is often simply a pair of names and a date that is added to the spoon. For other occasions, it may be fitting to add a simple message, such as ‘happy birthday’, or ‘with love to my mother/father/wife/husband’. The spoons are now also given as a token of thanks or friendship, so your message could reflect this.
Some of the designs also reflect the rich cultural heritage of Wales, and include national symbols, such as the red dragon, the daffodil, and Celtic knotwork. If you are buying a love spoon with a Celtic theme, you may wish to have a Welsh phrase inscribed on your spoon, such as ‘Cymru am Byth’, which means ‘Wales forever’, or ‘Long live Wales.’
Bear in mind that there is not a great deal of room for a long message on the spoons so each of our hand-carved Welsh Love Spoon’s will come with a beautiful gift card message
