It will be Mother’s Day on Sunday March 30, when we honour our Mums or the special maternal figure in our lives. If you are in Wales or just have an appreciation for the natural beauty and culture of the country, then why not celebrate with a gift or activity with a Welsh connection. Here are a few ideas.
The lovespoon
Welsh love spoons date back to the 17th century, when they were first crafted by young men and given as a romantic token of affection to a young lady. The handle of each spoon is adorned with a special symbol that carries a particular meaning, such as a heart for love; keys for security; and an anchor for attachment and stability.
The art of the lovespoon has been revived by local artisans in recent years, who have brought their own unique designs to the craft. The beautifully carved spoons are now given as gifts to loved ones and to celebrate milestone occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, births, and of course Mother’s Day.
The love spoons are rooted in Welsh heritage, and made with great skill from high quality wood such as limewood, sycamore, or walnut. They are a durable and meaningful gift that will far outlast alternatives such as flowers, chocolates, or perfume. Lovespoons can be displayed on stands, hung on the wall, or even mounted in frames as part of a collection.
A luxury spa weekend
If you want to combine a gift with some quality time with your Mum, why not book yourself a luxury spa weekend in the beautiful Welsh countryside. The Lake Vrynwy Hotel and Spa in Mid Wales is a four-star hotel standing at the head of a lake, and surrounded by forests and the Berwyn Mountain range in a large country estate.
There’s a jacuzzi spa pool overlooking the lakes, a sauna, an aromatherapy salt inhalation room, monsoon and mist showers, an ice shower and heated loungers. The restaurant also has scenic views of the surrounding countryside and an award-winning menu. There are also a good choice of cosy traditional pubs nearby if that’s more your Mum’s scene.
A walk by the sea
If your Mum loves to be beside the sea, then you are spoilt for choice of location with the beautiful Welsh coastline offering golden sandy beaches, hidden coves and hundreds of miles of clifftop walks. The Wales Coast Path runs the entire length of the country’s coastline, and spring is a lovely time to be out and about as nature blooms with fresh life.
The path is 870 miles long in total, so if you want to walk it all you have to set aside a few months! However, it’s easily accessible and you can dip in and out of sections at any location you wish. Some sections are steeper than others and may be more difficult for inexperienced walkers, so research the details before you set out.
